St. Francis of Assisi

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you have a lot of questions, and we are delighted to answer them for you. You are welcome to call our office between the school hours of 8:10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and we will be happy to serve you. To help you more quickly, below are several of the questions we get asked most frequently.

What should I do if my child has to miss a day of school?

Please call the office or e-mail the teacher and the secretary by 9:30 a.m. the morning of the absence. If parents do not call in an absent student on the day of the absence, we will call the parents to verify the whereabouts and safety of the child. Upon returning to school after a period of absence, the student must present to the teacher a note from the parent explaining the reason for the absence.

How should I pay my child’s school tuition?

We require that parishioners and non-parishioners with children in grades K through 8 pay tuition through the SMART Tuition Management System. An annual enrollment fee will be added to your account. Contact the parish manager, Mr. Ed Wirth at (502) 456-6394, if you have not yet enrolled in this program. Your records must be current on registration day. You have the option to pay your child’s tuition in advance directly to St. Francis of Assisi School. Contact Mr. Ed Wirth before July 1 to make this arrangement.

Does SFA offer a hot lunch program?

SFA does not offer a hot lunch program. However, we do promote good eating habits in our cafeteria. We encourage you to pay the cost of lunch-time milk (white or chocolate) at registration; the annual cost is $43.75. We do not permit students to bring in soft drinks from home as a lunch time beverage. Please be sure you provide your child a balanced selection of luncheon foods with minimal high sugar items. We also discourage sending fast food as a frequent lunch item; office personnel cannot manage the delivery of such lunches to the children at their assigned lunchtime. A balanced lunch, packed from home, is always the best option.

Do the students at SFA ever go on field trips?

Yes. We believe that field trips are educational activities that are an outgrowth of class instruction. If a teacher plans a field trip to enhance classroom learning, he/she will issue a permission slip before the trip. Parents/Guardians must sign and return it prior to the event. A child must have a signed, designated permission slip in order to attend any field trip. For most events, students will usually be transported by bus rather than by car because of the liability it places on the drivers. As field trips are a privilege, not a right, we reserve the right to deny the student participation if he/she fails to meet academic or behavioral requirements. Most field trip fees are paid at registration. Fees charged for field trips are non-refundable due to bus and program reservations, which are made in advance.

Is there a school library at St. Francis?

Yes, we have a great library for our students to use and check out books. All rules that apply to any library apply to our library. In addition:

  • If a student loses or misplaces a book, the student must pay for that book before he/she can check out another book.
  • If any student has not returned or replaced any book by the end of the school year, we will withhold the student’s report card and/or transcript until the library receives the book or payment for the book.

Are there foreign language courses at your school?

Yes, students in first through eighth grades receive Spanish instruction for a half hour each day. The class, taught by a trilingual teacher from Guatemala, teaches more than learning to speak a second language; it expands the students' knowledge in the area of social studies by helping them discover their relationship between themselves and other people of the world.

What should I do if I need to take my child out of school before the end of the school day?

All students must be released through the school office.

Please call the office to make suitable arrangements when it is necessary to remove your child from school, whether because of illness or another reason.

We will only release students into the custody of a parent/guardian or one who is listed on the student’s emergency information card. We require verification identification of the person removing the child from school.

Is there a telephone available for my child to use?

The office phone is a business phone, and we will allow students to use it only in case of emergency or with permission from the teacher. Students must also obtain permission from the secretary to use the phone.

Can I send in birthday “treats” for my child to share with the class?

Please give birthday treats, preferably healthful snacks, to the teacher to distribute in the classroom or at lunch time. Be sure to cut and wrap all treats individually; do not bring in large cookies or other items for the teacher to cut. Please do not take treats to the cafeteria at lunchtime and distribute them, and be sure that if you distribute party invitations, that you have one for every member of the homeroom.

What happens if my child gets sick at school?

If a student is sick or not feeling well at school, we will contact the student’s parent. We will make every effort to keep him/her in school; however, at the discretion of the staff, we may require that you or your emergency contact designee pick the child up from school. This is true especially for a fever, vomiting, or other illness which keeps the child from participating fully in school day activities.

What must I do to ensure that my child can take his/her medication during the school day?

When possible, please be sure to administer all medications at home. If school personnel must administer medications, they should receive appropriate preparation for the administration of medication and recording of medication. Please send the medication to school in its original container with the prescription label attached, which includes the physician's directions for dispensing the medication. We also require that parents/guardians sign an "authorization to give medication" form in order for school personnel to give medication to a student.

What do you do to ensure that my child will not be subjected to bullying from any student at SFA?

As Catholic educators, we teach the foundations that our school is the Body of Christ, and each student is precious in the eyes of God. Through that lens, we take any report of bullying very seriously. Our philosophy with bully prevention is to empower our students to take responsibility for their own actions and to encourage any bystanders to speak up for the victim. Through the PeaceBuilders Program, we promote “righting wrongs” and “helping others.”
